A Personal Relationship With The Bible
You NEED The Bible. We personally need the Bible because it will make us the people God wants us to be. We personally need the Bible so our families and churches can be what God wants them to be. We personally need the Bible so our nation can be what God wants it to be.
I have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. I have a personal relationship with the Bible. The two are inseparable. Abigail to David:
1 Samuel 25:29a: Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD thy God; . . .
David is in the bundle of life. God The Father is in there. Jesus is in there. The Holy Spirit is in there. The Bible is in there. I am in there and if you have received Jesus you are in there. All the Christians you know are in there.
If you have a poor relationship with the Bible you have a poor relationship with Jesus. If you have a good relationship with Jesus you have a good relationship with the Bible. If you love the Bible you love Jesus. If you have little time for the Bible you have little time for Jesus.
For 43 years I had a wrong relationship with the Bible. Before I received Jesus I had not received the Bible either. The Bible was dull to me. Now it is exciting. It left me unfulfilled. Now it fulfills me. I wanted it to leave me unchanged and I got what I wanted. I was unchanged.
In our personal relationship with the Bible we need to be careful not to pick out parts that we like and reject the what we don*t.
2 Peter 1:20: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
Acts 20:27: For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.
Our relationship with the Bible must be what the Bible wants it to be, not what we want it to be. Our relationship with the Bible must fit all of the truths in it. The Bible will not be what we want it to be. We need to be what the Bible wants us to be. The Bible will not say what we want it to say. We must say what the Bible wants us to say. The better we know the Bible, the better our personal relationship with it will be and the better our relationship with Jesus will be.
The Bible can meet our needs in many ways. Just one verse or phrase from the Bible can meet a need for us today. The same verse can meet a different need for us years later. Some needs might require a half dozen verses from the Bible. Some needs might require more verses. The Bible can meet our needs because it is alive. The word quick means alive.
Hebrews 4:12: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
John 6:63: It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
I am so thankful that when we were young, our parents made sure that all of my siblings and I heard plenty of the Word of God. I believe that even though I had no personal relationship with the Bible then, the scriptures I heard while growing up were stored in the recesses of my mind and were part of my salvation and some of them pop into my thoughts when I need then since I have been saved.
Proverbs 22:6: Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
It certainly worked that way for me. I departed from it when I was young and now, with God*s help, I will never depart from it again. I received Christ one morning in November of 1985. That same evening I began reading my Bible. The same day the Lord gave me a relationship with Jesus He gave me a relationship with the Bible. The Bible fits better in the mornings of my life. There have been very few days when I have not started my day with the Bible. Days that I do not start with the Bible have always had more difficulties.
I was specially blessed by the Lord in that about the first 10 years after I was saved I was able to listen on earphones to Christian radio, Christian music and the Bible on tape. It was as if I was in church four or five times a day. If there was something that the Lord wanted me to learn, three or four preachers would teach on that same truth. And they would all preach from different scriptures. If He hasn*t placed you in that kind of position, you can still read your Bible more than you think you can. You can read it instead of watching TV. You can give it the place in your life that God wants it to have. The only real problem we have is whether we want to depend upon the Bible or not.
I got the idea that I couldn*t retain all that I needed of the Bible in my little brain. I began creating alphabetical card files and note books on different Bible topics. Now I save them in an external hard drive so that when a computer crashes and I need a new one I will still have my Bible Treasures. I recommend you do that sort of thing. The Lord has also made a lot of Bible truth stick in my heart and my mind. He helps that happen more if I write things down or type them out. It happens enough that I can always do His will if I am willing. I recommend that you keep a Bible or two as handy as possible.
The Bible has enabled me to serve the Lord. Serving the Lord is the most fulfilling thing and the most thrilling thing in my life. If you are alert you will also notice that serving the Lord is the most thrilling thing in your life.
The Bible has helped me personally many times. When my father died I mourned deeply about it for a week or ten days. The Bible pulled me out of my mourning. I was reading my Bible every day looking for comfort. The Bible was inspired by the Comforter. This is the verse He gave me that ended my deep mourning:
Numbers 11:12: Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?
Moses was whining as if he were the one carrying the people of Israel. God was carrying them. In fact, God was carrying Moses too. What I got from the verse was that when my father was carrying me, it was God that was carrying me. When my father took care of me, it was God that took care of me. I didn*t have my earthly father anymore but I still had my Heavenly Father. I understood that my father*s care for me was temporary and that God*s care for me is eternal. My Heavenly Father gave me my earthly father and was carrying him too. I have learned that God uses the Bible to carry me just as He used my earthly father to carry me for a time. And He will carry me forever.
