Are You Aware Of Your Idols?
Smith*s Bible Dictionary Definition: Idol: An image or anything used as an object of worship in place of the true God.
Exodus 20:3-5: Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Anything that we put ahead of God, above God or in the place of God is an idol. Idols are often depicted in the Bible as physical images. An important issue is that idols are in our hearts and connected to our hearts. The physical idols come from the imagination of the heart. The physical idols are worshipped in the heart. When we have an idol in our heart it doesn*t always need a physical representation.
Ezekiel 14:3-5, 7: Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them? Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols; That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols. . . . For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself:
Idols in our hearts are easier to hide from others. They can even be hard to hide from ourselves. Therefore they are far more dangerous than external idols.
God wants and deserves our obedience. An idol is anything that we obey instead of God. God wants and deserves our faith. An idol is anything we trust instead of God. The Bible is full of commands to trust Him. Whatever part of us does not love the Lord loves an idol. Whatever part of us does not worship the Lord worships an idol. Sex, money, power, comfort, accomplishments, health, government and self can all be idols. Anything on earth or in the heavens can be an idol. Becoming a Christian is turning away from idols to God.
In the Old Testament God caused his people to destroy idols countless times. It always happens when people turn to God. In the New Testament believers turned from their idols and destroyed them when they came to Christ.
Acts 19:18-19: And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
God wants and deserves first place in our hearts and lives at all times. Satan will provide diversions many times each day. The Christian life is best lived by turning back to God from every diversion (idol) provided by Satan. We need a moment-by-moment turning to God. If we love God with all our heart, soul and mind, it means 24/7.
Idols are the cause of all of our problems. The Bible teaches that everything good comes from God. If we really believe that, we will depend upon Him for everything and idols for nothing.
Can you list the idols that you have turned from, especially those in your heart?
