Apart from its external appearance and slow rate of deterioration, artificial fruit has no value whatsoever when compared with real fruit. For one thing, real fruit grows and artificial fruit does not.
Galatians 5:22: But the fruit of the Spirit is love (agape), joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Ephesians 5:9: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
2 Thessalonians 1:3: We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity (agape) of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;
The word love in Galatians 5:22 and the word charity in 2 Thessalonians 1:3 are the same word, agape. Without the Holy Spirit, no one can bear the fruit of the Spirit. So how do we get the Holy Spirit? We get the Holy Spirit by receiving Jesus into our hearts and becoming children of God.
Galatians 4:4: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. 6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
Individuals who have not received Jesus do not have the Holy Spirit living in them. They cannot bear the fruit of the Spirit. They can only produce artificial fruit. How can we know the difference? It is impossible for individuals who have not received Jesus to know the difference because they have only produced imitation fruit. It is difficult but possible for individuals who have received Jesus to know the difference because they have produced the artificial fruit AND the Holy Spirit has produced His real fruit in them.
Matthew 7:15: Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep*s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Since believers are commanded to beware of false prophets, God gives them some ability to know the difference between false prophets and true ones. Artificial fruit does not grow or abound. All those without the Holy Spirit (those who have not received Jesus) can only bear artificial fruit which will not grow, artificial joy, artificial peace, artificial longsuffering, artificial gentleness, artificial goodness, artificial faith, artificial meekness, artificial temperance, artificial righteousness and artificial truth. Is the fruit of the Spirit growing in me and you? If your love for others is not increasing, you have a problem. You are producing artificial fruit.
