Better To Thee Than Ten Sons
1 Samuel 1:8: Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
Hannah was sorrowful because she had no children. Her husband Elkanah loved her above all others and wanted to make her happier than ten sons would. He wanted her to be satisfied with his love for her whether or not she had children. He wanted her to return that same kind of love to him. Because she loved him she wanted to give him children. And she was wise enough to give their first-born, Samuel, to the Lord. Their love for each other was a wonderful picture of what our relationship with the Lord should be.
I believe that Elkanah was really better to Hannah than ten sons would have been. The Lord is better to us than anything or anyone else that we might want. He wants us to be satisfied with His love whether or not we have a bunch of other lesser blessings and He wants us to return love to Him.
1 John 4:19: We love him, because he first loved us.
