Blindness To Sight

It is a great blessing when blind people receive sight. Jesus healed many blind people when He walked on earth. Occasionally doctors are able to perform surgery on the blind that gives them sight. Spiritual blindness is a far worse malady than physical blindness.

John 3:3: Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Jesus is the only one that can give spiritual sight. When He healed physical blindness He gave evidence that He could also heal spiritual blindness.

Matthew 13:13-16: Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people*s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

Mark 4:10-12: And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. 11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: 12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.

There are many things that believers can perceive since they have been born again and have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them that they could not perceive before. They were spiritually blind and separated from God. One of the greatest blessings He gives them when He saves them is an increase in their ability to perceive the things of God who is a Spirit.

John 4:23-24: But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

One of my mentors, Horst Adler, sent me this quote by Charles Hodge in Systematic Theology. Believer*s Spirituality through the indwelling Holy Spirit. Mr. Hodge clearly specifies many of the things that believers are able to perceive.

It is not, however, only one object which the opened eye of the believer is able to discern. The Spirit enables him to see the glory of God as revealed in His works and in His Word; the holiness and spirituality of the law; the exceeding sinfulness of sin; his own guilt, pollution, and helplessness; the length and breadth, the height and depth of the economy of redemption; and the reality, glory, and infinite importance of the things unseen and eternal. The soul is thus raised above the world. It lives in a higher sphere. It becomes more and more heavenly in its character and desires. All the great doctrines of the Bible concerning God, Christ, and things spiritual and eternal are so revealed by this inward teaching of the Spirit as to be not only rightly discerned, but to exert, in a measure, their proper influence on the heart and life.
