Characteristics Of Cults

2 Timothy 2:15: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Acts 17:11: These (the Bereans) were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

We need to study the Bible for ourselves. There is no other way to know if a teacher is teaching truth. If you do not study the Bible for yourself, you are already disobeying the Lord and you are already out of His will. If you do not study the Bible for yourself, you WILL choose the wrong teachers for the wrong reasons and you WILL be led astray.

Ephesians 4:11-13: And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Notice that the word teachers is plural. We need to find the Bible teachers God wants us to have and we need more than one of them. If we did not need them, He would not have given them. He gives us the specific teachers we need at exactly the time we need them. He knows which truths we need and when we need them. He knows exactly how long we need each teacher.

Many of these came from my Bible teacher, Pastor Leonard Bullock. The list is not exhaustive. I would appreciate anyone telling me of other characteristics that might be added to the list.

Members of cults will believe something unbiblical and erroneous about the Lord Jesus Christ.
They will not study the Bible for themselves and do not know how to study the Bible for themselves.
They believe that they cannot study the Bible for themselves and do not need to.
They will depend upon some elite human to teach them.
They will reject one or more simple truths of the Bible and will follow leaders who also reject truth.
Most cults have been started by just one domineering individual.
They claim to have new truth that no one else has.
They have new bibles and extra books.
They have a leader who seeks a following.
The members will be confused and searching.
They have pride and make claims of exclusivity.
They believe good works cause salvation.
They do not believe good works can only follow salvation.
They believe salvation is a process.
They will believe a saved one can be lost and saved again.
Their hearts will be unchanged.
They will practice infant baptism.
They will practice proxy baptism.
They will forbid to marry and command abstinence from meat.

1 Timothy 4:1, 3: Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; . . . 3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

There will sometimes be a few deceived genuine believers among them.

Matthew 24:24: For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
