Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
I have often heard cigarettes referred to as coffin nails. Cigarettes might kill but occasionally they don*t. Sins are the worst coffin nails. They always kill something or someone. Every sin, large or small, is a spiritual coffin nail. Sins destroy unbelievers spiritually and eternally. I have great sorrow as, before my very eyes and even publicly, I see many people totally destroying themselves spiritually, physically, intellectually, morally, emotionally and in every way by their sin. More people destroy themselves than ask the Lord to save them.
Matthew 7:13: Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
Romans 10:13: For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
The sin of rejecting Jesus is the eternal and irrevocable coffin nail. When we receive Jesus we receive the only successful nail-puller that can remove the coffin nails of sin. For those who receive Jesus all the coffin nails are removed. Our sins killed Jesus instead of us. Our coffin nails weren*t strong enough to hold the sinless Son of God.
For those who have received Jesus, their sins destroy their friendship, unity and fellowship with God and with one another. We might call the sins of believers temporary coffin nails. We can have them removed easily.
1 John 1:9: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Proverbs 28:13: He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
Sadly, many believers don*t confess and forsake their sin. They sacrifice their joy, their testimony and their fruitfulness for the Lord. They can become just as miserable as unbelievers or more so. Their prayers become ineffective.
Isaiah 59:2: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
What specifically do sins (coffin nails) kill? Are there things that sins don*t kill? Sins of children of God do not kill their relationship with God their Father. He is still their Father even when they sin, much like their earthly fathers are still their fathers when they are disappointed. Sins do temporarily destroy what Christians* relationships with their Father should be. Some things are destroyed eternally by sin and some things destroyed by sin can be restored. Our relationship with God our Father will be perfect when He takes us to heaven. The less we sin here on earth the better will be our relationship with God our Father.
By using the words destroy or damage instead of the word kill I don*t mean to down-play the damage done by sin. We do believe in resurrection. Some are resurrected to life and some to judgment. Some of the things that sin kills can be resurrected.
Just as there is an endless list of sins, there is an endless list of things that sins destroy. Sins kill relationships and many other things. They kill:
Dear ones, let*s ask Jesus to get rid of ALL of our coffin nails right now and as often as we hammer another one in.
