Fervent And Zealous

Those words mean just about the same thing. Some believe this about my Christianity: Man, you have got it bad. They are wrong. I have it good. They believe that I am too zealous for the Lord. I believe that I am not zealous enough. God is zealous and we are to be like Him.

2 Kings 19:31: For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.

Isaiah 37:32: For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.

Sometimes we seem to think that there is something wrong with fervent Christians. But we should desire to be more like them. God wants Christians to be fervent and we have a lot to be fervent about. Too often I do not want to be fervent. Sometimes I just want to be a luke-warm bump on a log. According to the Bible, my lack of fervency is disobedience and sin. Fervency is commanded and accomplishes much that won*t be accomplished without it. Fervent Christians are blessed in greater ways and their prayers are more effective.

1 Peter 4:8a: And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: . . .

Romans 12:10-11: Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; 11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

1 Peter 1:22: Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

James 5:16: Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Colossians 4:12: Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

Psalms 119:2: Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.

I have come to enjoy fervent Christians much more than luke-warm ones. Often it is easier to correct a fervent Christian who is serving the Lord than to get one to start serving the Lord who is not. A car that is parked does not need a steering wheel. Luke-warm Christians are like parked cars or perhaps more like broken-down cars.

Acts 18:24-26: And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. 26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

Psalms 69:9: For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

Psalms 119:139: My zeal hath consumed me, because mine enemies have forgotten thy words.

Ecclesiastes 9:10: Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Revelation 3:15-16: I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Lord, make us fervent!!
