God Or The TV
For millions in our world today the TV is their main idol. For most of my life the TV was my main idol. But now the Lord has won my heart away from it. Do you spend more time with God or with the TV? For much of my life I spent most of my time with the TV. Even after I was saved I spent way too much time with it. I was so ignorant I did not even recognize that the TV was in competition with God for my time and energy. He wants to be the source of what I learn. For too long the TV was the source of what I learned. The moment I received Jesus I turned from many of my idols but I was slow to turn from the TV. It had a firmer grip on me than the other idols of my flesh. The TV promotes many other idols, wealth, power, self, sex, amusement, government and so on. Shutting off the TV can weaken the grip of many other idols on us. There are three very important things we should spend more time on than the TV: Studying the Bible, praying and serving God. We should at the very least put the TV down from first place to fourth place. The farther down the better. Occasionally God uses the TV to bless me but I must be very careful to turn it on only when He wants me to and quick to turn it off when He wants me to. A pitiful woman in assisted living recently said about the TV: What else have I got? She could have the Lord and His Word. She claims to be a Christian but I fear she does not truly have Him.
Isaiah 9:6: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Who or what is more Wonderful to you, God or the TV?
Matthew 6:33a: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; . . .
Exodus 20:1: And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
Exodus 34:12: Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee: 13 But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves: 14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:
Deuteronomy 4:23: Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee. 24 For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.
Deuteronomy 6:14: Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you; 15 (For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.
1 Thessalonians 1:6: And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost: 7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. 8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing. 9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
1 Corinthians 12:2: Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.
