Good For Nothing

It seems that some individuals* chief goal in life is to be good for nothing. And they have succeeded, especially those who rejected Jesus. Even some believers seem to have that goal. Before we received Jesus and begin serving Him, in God*s eyes we were good for nothing. Goodness is twice named as the fruit of the Spirit. There is no spiritual goodness that comes from any other source but the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 5:22: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Ephesians 5:9: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

When we receive Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes into us and brings with Him goodness. It is goodness that worldlings cannot receive, cannot see and do not have.

John 14:17: Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Romans 8:9: But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

When individuals receive Christ in my presence, they often exhibit perceivable goodness that was not there before. Before they received Jesus they were troubled and afterwards they were at peace. Before they were joyless and afterwards they were joyful. Before they received Jesus they didn*t love me and afterwards they did.

If there are individuals in your life that don*t love you, (that seem to be good for nothing) try sharing the gospel with them. They obviously need it. Before I received Jesus, I had a sense that I was good for nothing, even to myself. No wonder I was so often unhappy. If you sense that you are good for nothing, you are probably right. Receive Jesus and He will make you good for something. As a believer, when I sense that I am good for nothing, if I do something for the Lord I am good for something. It might be something very simple and easy like reading the Bible, praying or just remembering the Lord. If you are a believer who has a sense that you are good for nothing, you are probably right. Do something for the Lord and you will be good for something and you will know that you are.

Jeremiah 13:10: This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing.

The Lord instructed Jeremiah to hide a girdle in a rock for many days after which the girdle was good for nothing.

Matthew 5:13: Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Good-for-nothing salt is a description of believers who are not filled with the Spirit and who are walking in the flesh.
