We receive Christ into our hearts and lives.

John 3:5: Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
How do we know we have the Holy Spirit? He communicates with our hearts that we are a child of God. He indwells us and helps us to love God and others like we never could or did before.
