How Not To Be A Christian

The Lord has given me many examples of how to be a Christian. It is troubling and seems a little strange to my pea-brain that He has given me many more examples of how not to be a Christian. Dr. J. Vernon McGee said that there is only one way for a stick to be straight and many ways for a stick to be crooked. There are many ways not to be a Christian. There is only one way to become a Christian, receive Christ and become a new creature in Him living in newness of life.

All genuine Christians are exactly the same in that they have Christ living in their hearts. But Christian personalities and Christian lives are a little bit like snow-flakes. There are no two snow-flakes exactly the same and there are no two Christians who live exactly the same. I have Christian examples that I should try to be like all the time, I have Christian examples that I should try to be like most of the time, I have Christian examples that I should occasionally try to be like and I have Christian examples that I should never try to be like. The Lord has put them all in my life for a reason. I believe there are things I should learn from all of them. We need to learn from the good examples how to be like them and we need to learn from the bad examples how not to be like them.

If you are blessed with Christians in your life that you should be like, praise the Lord and do your best to be like them. If you are stuck with Christians that you should not be like you have good examples to follow in the Bible. Strive to be like them. Much like my life, the Bible contains examples of believers that we should be like all the time and examples that we should be like only when they were right with God but not when they went astray, and examples that we should never be like. We should not be surprised that there are all different sorts of Christians in our lives.

Some of us are capable of learning things the easy way by having good examples and some of us are only capable of learning things the hard way, by having bad examples. Most of us are someplace in between, we need to learn from both kinds of examples. Neither the good examples nor the bad examples should get all of our attention. We obviously need some of each. If I learn not to be like the bad examples and learn to be like the good examples in my life and in the Bible I will be a good example.
