How To Send A Soul To Hell
Many believers are misguided and clumsy in their attempts to win souls. Many times immature believers witness to feel good about themselves rather than helping the other party. Some in the medical profession live by the motto: First of all, do no harm. That would be a good thought for witnessing believers as well.
I shall list some of the ways to drive people away from Christ and send them to Hell.
Argue with them.
2 Timothy 2:23-26: But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
It says they may recover themselves. It is not our job to recover them out of the snare of the devil. A cult or a church without the correct doctrine of salvation is a snare of the devil.
Some believers seem to think they must win an argument with an unbeliever about his false church to win him to Christ. Nothing could be more certain of driving him away from Christ. Any question or issue that does not lead directly or indirectly to Jesus Christ will be a foolish and unlearned question. The passage says they oppose themselves. If you oppose them as well, what chance will they have to be saved? Do not get into a situation where they will strive with you. Let their striving be with the Holy Spirit.
Genesis 6:3a: And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: . . .
Isaiah 1:18: Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Reasoning together is not arguing.
Get angry with them.
James 1:20: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
The angry one is controlled by the one making him angry. We are way off the mark when we get angry at someone who has not yet been forgiven for his sins. After all, our sins were probably worse than his before we were saved. We have only been forgiven because of the grace of God. When you get angry at someone you are witnessing to, he ought to have nothing to do with you. He would even be obeying a command in the Proverbs if he gets rid of you.
Proverbs 22:24: Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:
Insult them, their parents, their family or their religion.
Proverbs 18:19: A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.
If you know things about his religion that are not Biblical, good for you, but keep them to yourself. If we point out the errors of his religion we are not preaching the gospel. We are not giving him the truth that will save him, the Word of God. Depending upon whether he has chosen the religion himself or is part of it because his parents chose it, we are either insulting him or his parents or both. We are, in a sense, putting ourselves and our religion above him. He will know it and won*t respond if and when you do get around to sharing the gospel. It can be a competition between him and you instead of an acceptance or rejection of Christ.
Give them scriptures that prove their religion is wrong.
Then he will give you the scriptures that seem to him to say his religion is right. You can go round and round that way until he goes to Hell. At some point, you need to get off that Merry-go-round and give him the gospel facts. In fact, once you have got on the Merry-go-round you have probably ruined your chance to share the gospel. An unwise Christian once told me that an unbeliever has to come out of a false church before he could be saved. Hogwash! He thought coming out of a cult was a step toward Christ. Not necessarily. He could step out of a cult in any of 360 degrees. And Jesus Christ might be none of those 360 possibilities. We are not saved by coming out of a false church. We are saved by coming to Christ! Keep in mind that when you criticize his religion, he will feel like you are criticizing him. That unwise Christian said that Christ is not a magic bullet solving every problem. I don*t want to seem irreverent here but Christ is a magic bullet. In fact, He is the only magic bullet.
Acts 4:10-12: Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Sin against them or in their sight.
2 Samuel 12:13-14: And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.
By our sin, we do not lift up the Lord. We make Him seem undesirable or evil. The Bible says our good works will show them that our God is good.
Matthew 5:16: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
1 Peter 2:12: Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
When you participate with unbelievers in their sin, you forfeit your opportunity to successfully win them to Christ. They can then see your sin up close and personal. A pastor friend of mine had a backslidden older brother. When the older brother*s unsaved wife was open to the gospel he asked his mother to lead his wife to Christ. He said to his mother: I*m such a sinner I can*t do it.
Withhold the Bible or only use it as a last resort.
Romans 10:17: So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
It does not say Faith cometh by losing an argument to a knowledgeable Christian. It does not say faith comes in any other way but by hearing the Word of God. Every thought, word or action of ours should move him always and only toward making a decision to accept or reject Christ. We should have no interest in convincing an unsaved person to decide to come out of a false religion. We should only want to give him the Word of God, which is his only hope.
2 Timothy 4:2: Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
John 8:32: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
It does not say attacking the lie will make you free. It does not say proving the lie will make you free. It does not say getting rid of the lie will make you free.
When we change, misunderstand or omit just one word in a sentence in God*s Word, we change the meaning of it. When we then proceed to obey a changed, misunderstood or omitted truth, we get out of God*s will. When we give a changed, misunderstood or omitted truth to an unbeliever, we prevent him from coming to faith in Christ. We must be careful to give God*s truth and only God*s truth.
Try to get them to come out of their cult.
Most people in cults believe they will get to heaven because of what they do and believe. Before you were saved, you did not believe your little white lies or petty thievery would get you to heaven. You were not even seeking heaven. They are at least interested in heaven. Perhaps their sins are therefore less evil than yours. Were you ever seeking heaven in a wrong way? Were you converted when someone told you that you should stop lying or stealing or when you heard about Christ?
Before I was saved I was seeking forgiveness for my sins in a liberal church where unbeknownst to me, God*s forgiveness was not available. I was accorded an honor by that liberal church. I prayed a simple prayer in which I asked the Lord to make me worthy of that honor. For the first time in my life I was seeking help from the right place, God Himself. I knew I needed something that I didn*t have that only God could provide. Inside of a month, He permitted me to hear the gospel on Christian radio, respond to it in faith and be saved.
My getting saved was not the result of learning of the errors of that liberal church. It took a few weeks in the Word of God after I had been saved for me to learn of those errors. Knowing the errors of that church did not precede my salvation, it followed my salvation. Knowing the errors of that church did not cause my salvation. My salvation caused me to know that I was not saved by the doctrines or practices of that church.
1 Corinthians 1:30: But of him (God) are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
Spiritual wisdom comes from having Christ. Christ does not come from first having spiritual wisdom. Trying to give spiritual wisdom to a Christless person is casting pearls before swine.
Matthew 7:6: Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
It does not say whosoever loses faith in his idol should not perish. It does not say whosoever loses faith in his church should not perish.
Be unprepared to deal with them.
1 Peter 3:15: But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
Don*t pray for them.
This doesn*t even need an explanation.
Tear down what they believe.
John 12:32: And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
It does not say: if their idol be torn down I will draw all men unto me.
Contend against what they believe.
Jude 1:3: Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
It does not say contend against anything. You need to know there is a difference between contending for something and contending against something else.
1 Corinthians 1:17: For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
Gospel means good news. Preaching against idols would be bad news. Wisdom of words will not bring men to Christ and in fact it will make the cross of Christ of none effect.
Do you want them to trust in God or trust in you? Do you want them to submit to God or submit to you? Do you want them to think you are wonderful? Or do you want them to think Jesus Christ is wonderful?
Educate them about their cult or false religion.
Many in the cults do not even know the doctrines of the cult. They may be permitted to be in the false religion simply because they don*t make waves. You may be attacking something they do not even believe. You might be reinforcing their incorrect beliefs. If you tell them something about their false religion that they did not know, you may be giving them another wrong reason to stay in it.
Give them all truth no matter what.
John 8:32: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 17:17: Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
God*s word alone is the truth that will direct men to trust Christ. There is truth that is unhelpful in leading someone to Christ, such as truth about falsehood, such as about a false church. There is truth that will drive them away from Christ. Telling them that their nose is too big will do about as much spiritual good as telling them their religion is wrong.
Criticize them or be sarcastic.
Ephesians 4:15: But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
It does not say speaking the truth in criticism. It does not say speaking the truth in sarcasm.
Emphasize your words and wisdom rather than the Bible.
Psalms 19:7: The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
Your words and my words are not perfect. They will never convert a soul. They will never make wise the simple.
2 Timothy 3:15: And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Your words and my words will never make anyone wise unto salvation.
This is the Biblical definition of the gospel:
1 Corinthians 15:1-4: Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
The gospel is not: *Your religion is wrong.*
