How To Win A Soul 4 (Revised)

In my ministry as chaplain at a rest home I have suggested to residents a scenario in which they are the patient and they are also the examining physician. Ultimately, their evaluation of themselves and of Jesus will be deciding factors in their eternal destination. They might judge themselves to already be worthy of heaven and therefore not believe they need to receive Jesus. They might judge themselves to be so unworthy that receiving Jesus would not be sufficient for them. Or they might judge themselves unworthy and see their need of Jesus. I ask them if I may read one passage from the Bible to them. If they grant me permission this is the passage I read or quote to them:

2 Corinthians 13:5a: Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

I suggest that the passage gives an interesting command. The passage lowers their resistance to me. They feel safe because they learn that I will not be judging them. I mention that I cannot look upon their heart but God can. I mention that He knows those that are His. I might read or quote these 2 verses.

Acts 15:8: And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;

John 10:27: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

I share with them that the Lord gives many verses in the Bible which they can use to diagnose their own spiritual condition. If they are willing I then share more verses with them. If they are unsaved and get their diagnosis correct there is a good possibility that they might be willing to receive Jesus. I*ll suggest some passages you might read to them and some questions you might ask that will help them to diagnose themselves. Do not give them the answers. Your diagnosis of them is irrelevant unless they want a second opinion. According to their answers to the questions you might suggest that they give themselves a fail, an inconclusive or a pass on each particular exam. You may prefer some different and better passages than I use.

1 John 5:13: These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Do you know for certain that you will go to heaven when you die? Many will say they THINK or HOPE they are going to heaven. The Bible says KNOW.

John 1:12: But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Have you received Jesus?

Ephesians 3:17a: That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; . . .

Have you received Jesus into your heart?

2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Has Jesus made you into a new creature?

John 3:3: Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Have you been born again?

If they give themselves mostly passing grades they may be Christians already. If they have lied to you and to themselves in their answers there isn*t anything you can do about it except pray for them. If they have given themselves mostly failing or inconclusive grades I will tell them that there are only 6 or 8 verses from the Bible that they need to believe to change their failing grades to passing ones. If they are willing I will share a few appropriate verses that will teach them the simple truths that they must know.

They must acknowledge that they are sinners, they deserve Hell, Heaven is a free gift, paid for by Jesus when He died, they must ask God for the gift, they must understand the gift will change them according to God*s will and that when they receive Jesus they get the gift.

Here are the verses I usually use. You may prefer others.

Romans 3:23: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 5:8: But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 10:13: For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

John 1:11-12: He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Ephesians 3:17a: That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith;

If they acknowledge these truths I ask them a question something like this: *Do you believe that if you receive Jesus into your heart He will forgive your sins and make you a new creature?* If they answer in the positive I ask them if they are willing to receive Jesus. Many are willing to receive Jesus and do so.
