Jesus Is God
Two of my mentors, Pastor Kent McBay and Horst Adler inspired the thoughts I shall share with you in this article and possibly several more. I plan to begin a few articles with the two words Jesus is or Jesus Has.
I have been told about a certain cult that they consider Baptists to be their most fertile field for recruiting new members. I have encountered members of that cult who tried to recruit me. My two mentors encountered a former Baptist who had probably received Jesus but was duped into joining the cult because he did not know enough truth about Jesus from the Bible. I too have encountered cult members like that. Believers who do not know enough Biblical truth about Jesus will be easy picking for cult recruiters.
The definition of every cult is that they will believe and propagate something false about Jesus. The more we know about Jesus, the more we will be able to understand false beliefs about Jesus in the cults. We need to be able to prove the important truths about Jesus from the Bible for our own benefit as well as for the benefit of any cult member who confronts us and tries to lead us astray. Statements like I believe this about Jesus because my Pastor believes it or my church believes it will be insufficient. We must be able to prove why we believe what we believe from the Bible.
The most important error of the cults is that they do not believe that Jesus is God, that He is the Son of God and that He is God the Son. Pastor McBay provided several passages in which the Bible teaches that Jesus is God. If you frequently deal with cult members, you need to get familiar with these passages, memorize them or at least know their address in the Bible. If you have a poor memory like mine you might need to carry them in your wallet or purse.
John 20:28: And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
Titus 2:13: Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
1 John 5:20: And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
Hebrews 1:1-3, 8: God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; . . . 8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
Jesus was called The Word.
John 1:14: And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 1:1-3: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
1 John 5:7: For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
