Know Thine Enemy 1

My Pastor, Kent McBay, provided most of the scriptures that will appear in this article. He also provided or inspired the thoughts that will appear here.

Sun Tzu:

If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.

Some have said those thoughts cannot be specifically found in the Bible. But the Bible teaches us a great deal about ourselves and about Satan, who is our enemy, and we ought to learn everything we can of what the Bible says about us and our enemy, paying special attention to how we can be safe from this murderous predator. He would like to convince you that he does not exist and you do not need to be concerned about him. God obviously wants us to know all about ourselves and Satan. When we receive Christ, Satan has lost the war. As we day by day submit ourselves to God and resist the Devil he flees from us and we also win the skirmishes and the battles.

Ephesians 6:12: For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Those principalities, powers and rulers are Satan and his demons. They will often use humans that they control. He wants to control ALL OF US by every means he can think of.

1 Peter 5:6-8: Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Whether you are a believer or not, he is your adversary and he wants to devour (destroy) you.

2 Corinthians 2:10-11: To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; 11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

He wants us to be unforgiving. He wants us to be ignorant of his devices so that he can get an advantage over us. He wants us to be ignorant about him.

Ephesians 6:11-17: Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

We need the whole armour of God to protect us.

2 Corinthians 11:3: But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

Satan is subtle and wants to beguile (seduce and deceive) us. He wants to corrupt us.

Revelation 12:12: Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

He is very angry because he knows that he has but a short time.
