God wants us to grow in good ways and Satan wants us grow in evil ways. The longer we are Christians the closer the Lord wants to bring us to Him, and the longer that individuals reject Him, the worse and farther from Him they get. The closer believers get to the Lord the farther unbelievers and carnal Christians get from them. Our sin and its effects can multiply and increase and righteousness can also multiply and increase. Only with God*s help can we turn ourselves and our lives around.
Song of Solomon 2:15: Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.
Several commentators express the passage as a picture of little sins and little errors that would grow and spoil marriages, Israel, churches and the lives of individuals, both believers and unbelievers. Our sins often start out little. But foxes don*t stay little and neither do our sins. When I was growing up in North Dakota some of my friends would occasionally catch some little foxes. There was an interesting thing about those little foxes. They could never be tamed. No one ever caught them early enough to take the wildness out of them. They didn*t hurt their captors very badly while they were little but as they grew they either had to be killed or released. None of my friends ever managed to keep those little foxes (or keep control of them) until they grew up. They were cute when they were little but after they had bitten my friends often enough and long enough they weren*t cute any more. My friends inevitably got tired of being bitten. We should be wise enough to get tired of being bitten by our sins.
2 Timothy 3:13: But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
2 Timothy 2:16: But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
Romans 5:20: Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
2 Peter 1:2: Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
1 Timothy 6:6: But godliness with contentment is great gain.
Acts 12:24: But the word of God grew and multiplied.
1 Peter 1:2: Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
Jude 1:2: Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.
For Christians growing a little this way and a little that way is a terrible trap and growing downward is even worse. So which way are you growing? And which way am I?
Romans 8:13: For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Colossians 3:5: Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
Mortify means kill. It is you or them!
