Might As Well Surrender

To God that is.

Excerpted from Lectures In Systematic Theology by Henry Clarence Thiessen:

God is over all areas of each man*s existence. Over the birth, career, and death of men. God is actively involved before one is yet born.

Psalms 139:16: Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

Jeremiah 1:5: Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

God works out his purposes in one*s life.

1 Samuel 16:1: And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

Galatians 1:15-16: But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother*s womb, and called me by his grace, 16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not 1with flesh and blood:

This is the case whether one recognizes it or not.

Isaiah 45:5: I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:

Esther 4:14: For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father*s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

God provides for man*s needs.

Matthew 5:45: That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Matthew 6:25-32: Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 For after all these things do the Gentiles seek: for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

Acts 14:17: Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

God determines the time and circumstances of man*s death.

Deuteronomy 32:49-50: Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession: 50 And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people:

John 21:19 : This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

2 Timothy 4:6-8: For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

God has control over the successes and failures of men. He promotes and demotes people.

Psalms 75:7: But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

God puts down princes and exalts the lowly.

Luke 1:52: He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

God makes rich and makes poor.

1 Samuel 2:6-8: The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. 7 The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up. 8 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD*S, and he hath set the world upon them.

He is involved in the very thinking process of man.

Proverbs 21:1: The king*s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

He is over the most trivial of circumstances. He is concerned with the sparrow, and more so the hairs of our head.

Matthew 10:29-31: Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

He determines the way the lot falls.

Proverbs 16:33: The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.

He even gives and withholds sleep.

Esther 6:1: On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.

He is over the needs of His people. He cares for His own.

1 Peter 5:7: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

He gives safety.

Psalms 4:8: I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.

He protects.

Psalms 121:3: He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

He provides good.

Psalms 5:12: For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.

He sustains.

Psalms 63:8: My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.

He supplies needs.

Philippians 4:19: But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

In general He makes all things work out for good for those who love Him.

Romans 8:28: And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Isaiah 64:4: For from old they have not heard nor perceived by ear, neither has the eye seen a God besides Thee, Who acts in behalf of the one who waits for Him.

He presides over the destinies of the saved and the unsaved. He will bring the believer through this life to glory.

Psalms 73:24: Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

Though he fall, the Lord will uphold him.

Psalms 37:23-24: The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. 24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.

Judgment shall come from the Lord upon the unbeliever.

Psalms 11:6: Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.

He is over the free acts of men. He worked in the hearts of the Egyptians to do His bidding.

Exodus 12:36: And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.

He worked in the heart of David.

1 Samuel 24:18: And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.

He worked in the heart of Artaxerxes.

Ezra 7:27: Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, which hath put such a thing as this in the king*s heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem:

He works in the hearts of believers.

Philippians 2:13: For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

He works in the hearts of kings.

Proverbs 21:1: The king*s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

He works in the hearts of all men.

Jeremiah 10:23: O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

Proverbs 16:1: The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.
