Our Connection To Heaven
John 14:14: If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
1 John 5:14: And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
Praying in Jesus* name means praying according to His will. In one sense, praying is our connection to Heaven and in another sense Jesus is our connection to Heaven. If we always knew His will perfectly, we would have to be God.Romans 11:33: O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
Since we are not God, we need to put His will above our own. Praying for His will acknowledges that He is above us and that we want Him there. Our connections to Heaven are Jesus and the prayers that we pray according to His will. Jesus is a full-time connection and our prayers are a part-time connection.John 14:6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Our selfish prayers will never be answered.James 4:3: Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
In the prayer that Jesus taught, He taught that we should ask for God*s will before we ask for anything else.
Luke 11:2: And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
Regardless of what we pray for, we should ask for His will first and last. We should surround our prayers with requests for His will. In fact, a desire for His will and the knowledge that He knows best should permeate all of our prayers. When we want His will, we have the promise of the help of the Holy Spirit in our prayers.Romans 8:26: Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Sometimes we know God*s will while we are praying, sometimes we learn it when the answers come and sometimes we won*t learn it until we get to Heaven. But whether we know His will perfectly or not, we should keep on praying.1 Thessalonians 5:17: Pray without ceasing.
We should desire the connection more than we desire the answers to our prayers.
