Presumption

Psalms 19:13: Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

I wonder how we Christians make decisions. All of us are presumptuous at times. We assume we know the will of God when we have not consulted Him. When Moses smote the rock a second time it proved that God does not always do things the same way. While God never changes He wants some things done differently in different times and different places.

We ought to consult Him about every decision, large and small. Sometimes He gives us right understanding for one moment but it can be the wrong understanding a moment later. It can be wrong understanding if we simply apply it in a different time, a different place or a different circumstance.

Proverbs 3:5: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Isaiah 28:29: This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.

Psalms 23:3: He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name*s sake.

His leadership is often just one step at a time or one day at a time.

Psalms 37:23: The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.

How many steps can we take at a time?

Matthew 6:34: Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

James 4:14-15: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

Only God knows what must be done today and what must be done tomorrow. The first and most important thing we ought to plan to do today and tomorrow is to consult God first about everything.

None of us have ever made a mistake when we truly put His will above ours. I am often amazed at the peace I have and what gets accomplished when I ask Him to lead me. We should do everything in our power to make consulting Him a habit AND we should pray what was one of David*s wisest prayers:

Psalms 19:13: Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
