Sex Before Marriage
I had a handsome and gracious friend when I was in the service more than 5 decades ago. I could not have imagined any woman ever divorcing that man. He was a little older than I. He gave me some wisdom I will never forget. He told me that he and his then fiance had sex before they were married and that one occasion of pre-marital sex ruined sex for them after their marriage. He said that the specialness of it was gone. They were unable to make one another happy. They divorced before I met him. He told me that he still loved her. His love for her was obvious. He knew that he had ruined his life and hers and that there was no one to blame but himself. We lived on a military base thousands of miles from where he and his wife had lived. I never met her and don*t know how she felt about these things. Whether she knew it or not, she had damaged their lives too. I wonder if they ever got back together. I really hope so.
But only Jesus in both of their hearts and lives could repair a relationship like that. I was not a Christian at the time but since I have become saved I have learned that the only way that he could have acquired that kind of wisdom was if he had received Christ before I met him.Hebrews 13:4: Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.
For them the honour of sex was gone, their bed was defiled before the marriage and any innocence and trust and much of the desire they might have had before were gone.
The Lord does not approve of pre-marital sex because it hurts the ones who have it. In Old Testament law if a man had sex with a woman before they were married, he was required to pay her father rather than receive a dowry, required to marry her and he could never divorce her. He was required to support her for the rest of his life in addition to the fact that he would probably never in his life have the full and God-intended enjoyment of sex. She would be with him all of his life to remind him of his folly.Deuteronomy 22:28: If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; 29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel*s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.
Our society proves over and over that adultery reaps horrible consequences too.
