Sinners Harm Themselves

2 Timothy 3:13: But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

2 Timothy 2:16: But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Our sins harm us and they often harm others as well but there are some who are protected from harm by the Lord. My sin harms me and yours harms you. Without God*s intervention, sin takes us on an unstoppable downward spiral. Our sin comes between us and God.

Isaiah 59:2: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. 3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.

Unbelievers are completely separated from God. Believers never lose His presence in their hearts but their sin hinders their fellowship with Him and interferes with their fruitfulness. Sin is like a cloud between us and God. Sin does harm to our consciences. It defiles and weakens them. One sin will make the next one easier. There are many things that I cannot do without feeling guilt that I could do without remorse before I was saved. I hope and pray that is true of you too.

Titus 1:15: Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

1 Corinthians 8:7: Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

If men do not repent, they eventually sear their own conscience. Men actually destroy the usefulness of their consciences. They can reach horribly low levels of evil and believe that they are not evil.

1 Timothy 4:1: Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

When we become saved God goes to work on our consciences. They are made new and purified. We become aware of sins that we did not know were sins before. Sometimes we were unwilling to know they were sins. We are to have part in keeping our consciences sensitive to sin by quickly confessing and forsaking our sin.

2 Corinthians 5:17; Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

1 Timothy 1:5: Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned. 3:9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

Acts 24:16: And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

Hebrews 10:22: Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
