The Mysterious Mind

This study will take more time than most. It is more than four typewritten pages long.

The human mind is sometimes simplistically thought of as just a brain. A brain is a physical thing but it is more than that. It is physically alive. It has cells, elements, compounds, chemicals, electric impulses and many other physically discernable things. But we also have minds, hearts, souls and spirits that function through the brain and control the brain. They are the non-material or non-physical part of us. They are the real us. I believe that mind over matter is true as relating to our brain. It is very difficult to define where the physical ends and the non-physical begins.

I do not claim to have any special knowledge of that. My definitions are my own. I am certain that others have better definitions of these things than I have. The terms heart, soul, mind and spirit seem at times to be used interchangeably in the Bible. At other times it is obvious that there are distinctions.

One thing that I can tell you first-hand is that the minds of non-Christians and Christians function differently. I have been a non-Christian and now I am a Christian. My mind definitely works differently now. If you are not a Christian you have not personally experienced the changes that God makes in a person*s heart, soul, mind and spirit. If you have not experienced those changes you are not a Christian.

2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Psalms 55:19: God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.

Here are some general definitions that satisfy me: My heart is the non-material me. It is the real me. My soul is the non-material part of me that is aware of my body and the world around me. My spirit is the non-material part of me that God connects to Himself. Through my spirit He gets access to the rest of me. My spirit, heart, mind and soul define who I am.

Proverbs 23:7a: For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: . . .

He changed my spirit, heart, mind, soul and my thoughts and thereby changed me and redefined me. Before I became a Christian the non-material part of me caused the material part of me to be and do evil. Since I have become a Christian the non-material part of me struggles to get the material part of me to be righteous. God will one day perfect every part of all of us.

1 Thessalonians 5:23: And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Whether we understand these things correctly or not the Lord does. He knows where one part of our being ends and another begins. He created us and knows how we were put together. To call Him a mind-reader is an understatement. He is the Creator of our minds.

Ezekiel 11:5: And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and said unto me, Speak; Thus saith the LORD; Thus have ye said, O house of Israel: for I know the things that come into your mind, every one of them.

Hebrews 4:12: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Isaiah 55:8-9: For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

The Bible says many things about our minds. I trust you will enjoy them and benefit by reading them. I shall first share some things the Bible teaches about the minds of believers and then things it teaches about the minds of unbelievers. I pray that these passages will cause you to commit your mind and thoughts to the Lord.
