Matthew 15:1: Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, 2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. 3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. 5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; 6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. 23:1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, 2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses* seat: 3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
I understand the Jews produced hundreds of laws and traditions from the Ten Commandments given by God. There are millions of would-be believers who do the same. There are some traditions that were established by God and some that were established by mortal men. God gave some of His traditions through men. We must know the source of the traditions and attach no spiritual value to those established by men and attach great value to those established God. Traditions that men participate in who have never received Jesus are spiritually irrelevant.
Jeremiah 17:5: Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.
We must have no faith in mortal men or in the traditions they establish.
2 Thessalonians 3:6: Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
The traditions of men are produced by unchanged hearts do not change their hearts. Changing the hearts of men is the work of God alone.
Acts 15:8: And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them (Gentiles) the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; (Jews) 9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
Ephesians 3:14: For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
The traditions of men only go flesh-deep. Hearts purified by God in which Jesus dwells are blessed by participating in God-given traditions. But we are not saved by cursed traditions or blessed ones. Salvation is a free gift. Blessed traditions do not precede or earn salvation, they follow it.
Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Ephesians 2:8: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
2 Corinthians 9:15: Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.
