Truth Upon Truth
John 8:31-32: Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Note the progression in this passage. First of all, notice who Jesus was speaking to. He was speaking to people who believed on Him. For individuals who do not believe on Him, continuing in his word will not make them His disciples, they will not know the truth and the truth shall not make them free.
The next step in the progression is continuing in His word. Continuing in His word is not just reading it and hearing it. Continuing in His word includes doing it. If we don*t do His word we deceive ourselves. We don*t have the truth.
James 1:22: But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
If we believe in Him and if we continue in His word, then we are His disciples indeed. It does not say we are His disciples in word. It does not say we are His disciples in thought. It does not say we are His disciples in wishing for it or in wanting it. We are His disciples in our actions, in our deeds and in reality. We are then His disciples in truth.
Then we shall know the truth and then the truth shall make us free.
John 14:6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 17:17: Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Jesus is THE truth and God*s Word is additional truth. It comes from Him. It is a progression of truth. It is specific truth. It is truth in great detail. It is truth in writing.
Sanctified means set apart for God. We are sanctified (set apart) by Jesus AND by God*s Word. We are set apart for God, set apart to continue in His Word on earth and set apart to go to Heaven.
Those who are not free are captives. They are captives to something and someone. They are captives to lies and to Satan. If individuals reject THE truth, they are captives of Satan. If they reject additional truths they are captive to lies. If they reject just one of the additional truths they are captive to one lie. Being captive to one lie makes it easier to become the captive of the next. Being captive to one lie damages all of the truths, it taints them, it clouds them, it distorts them and degrades them. Being captive to one lie damages you, taints you, clouds your vision, distorts you and degrades you. If you reject any of His truths, He cannot take you all the way to the next one. You won*t deserve the next one. The next one would be wasted on you. You would probably reject it too.
Truth is built upon truth. A truth cannot stand upon a falsehood. Truth upon falsehood is irrelevant truth. Truth upon falsehood is misguided truth. Truth upon falsehood is not completely true.
Isaiah 28:10: For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
I think of a staircase in which the first step is Jesus and it is so huge that if we don*t get on it we can*t reach any of the other steps. All who have Jesus are aware that there are things they did not understand before they received Jesus.
Jesus is the first truth. When we have Him, He puts the other truths within our reach and in the right places. If we don*t have Him the other truths will be out of reach and useless to us.
