The Victims Of The Enemy
I don*t recall very much of a message delivered by a young assistant pastor named Curt Gough I heard a couple of decades ago. But I remember the title he gave the message: The Victims of The Enemy. Satan is the enemy and those who fall prey to him are His victims.
2 Timothy 2:24-26: And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
I believe we can call Satan and his demons enemies with a capital E. And we can call unrepentant humans enemies of God with a small e. Both types of enemies are enemies of God. But the Bible commands us to love the small e enemies.
Colossians 1:21: And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
Matthew 5:44: But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
We must not minimize their guilt in the matter but Adam and Eve were victims of Satan. Before we received Christ and were reconciled to God we were full-time enemies of God and victims of Satan. And every time a Christian yields to temptation, he is a willing, ignorant, unfaithful and sinful victim of Satan.
Jesus died for the sins of mortal men. He did not die for the sins of Satan and his demons. Men can be redeemed. Demons cannot. Demons had a greater knowledge of our wonderful God than we mortals and yet they sinned against Him.
We should not battle against our human enemies in the same fashion as against our spiritual enemies. We should battle AGAINST our spiritual enemies but we should battle FOR our human enemies. We can strike blows against spiritual enemies only by spiritual means. We can give the small e enemies The Word of God, the Bible. We can pray for them. We can share the gospel with them. We can help free them from the snares of the Devil. We can love them.
We have several weapons with which to fight these enemies, the Bible, our faith, our submission to God, our resistance of the Devil, the blood of Christ, our testimony and the power of God.
Ephesians 6:13-17: Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
1 John 5:4: For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
James 4:7: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Revelation 12:11: And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
1 John 4:4: Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
