What Humility Does

1 Peter 5:5b: . . . be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

We MUST be humble before God. Humility obeys Him and esteems other better than self. Our humility before God must come first. Often humility before Him is personal and private and can only be apparent to Him. As we are humble before Him, we will esteem other better than self. Humility before mortal men more than before God is idolatry, hero worship. Jesus should be our hero. True humility gets so wrapped up in obeying God and blessing others that it does not think of self, except for how self can obey God and bless others.

Philippians 2:5: Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

How humility happens: God humbles us AND we humble ourselves.

Deuteronomy 8:2: And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.

How God humbles us: Much like He humbled the people of Israel. He leads us in the wilderness of our going our own way and He shows us that His way is best.

1 Peter 5:6: Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

How we humble ourselves under God: We learn that He knows best we obey Him.

How to measure humility: How often do we ask God what He wants and obey Him, once a day, ten times a day or all day long? How often do we esteem other better than self, once a day, ten times a day or all day long? How often do we think of others rather than self? It helps to remember God*s promise to supply all our needs. If we trust Him to supply all our needs, we can focus on meeting the needs of others.

Philippians 4:19: But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Matthew 6:7: But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

God knows exactly what we need. Often what we think we need is totally unnecessary and would actually be harmful. Humility before God knows those things. Here are just a few things that humility before God does:

Proverbs 3:5: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

1 Peter 5:7: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

1 Thessalonians 5:16: Rejoice evermore. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 19 Quench not the Spirit. 20 Despise not prophesyings. 21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
