What The Bible Is For 2

John 17:17: Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.

The Bible is to sanctify men. What does sanctify mean?

I somewhere heard that Webster was a Christian. I cannot verify that and I cannot verify that those who have modified our dictionaries are Christians. But my Webster*s II has pretty good definitions of the word sanctify: To make holy or sacred, to free from sin, to purify.

Strong*s Concordance definitions of sanctify: To make holy (ceremonially), purify, consecrate; (mentally) to venerate; hallow, be holy, sanctify.

That word mentally in the definitions is interesting. I believe it means that our minds are to be thinking what God wants us to think.

Some have rightly defined the word as Set apart for God. Here is my simple definition: To make us what God wants us to be so we will do what He wants us to do.

1 Thessalonians 5:23: And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Sanctifying us, making us what God wants us to be is the work of God Himself. He does much of it through the Bible. But we are to do some sanctifying too.

Leviticus 11:44a: For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves . . .

It is interesting that we are to sanctify inanimate objects. They will not resist our sanctifying them. Would to God we were more like that.

Exodus 40:10: And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt offering, and all his vessels, and sanctify the altar: and it shall be an altar most holy.

Leviticus 8:11: And he sprinkled thereof upon the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all his vessels, both the laver and his foot, to sanctify them.

And we are to Sanctify the Lord Jesus in our hearts.

1 Peter 3:15: But sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord: being ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear:

How are WE to sanctify HIM? As Lord! That means that we are to ask Him to be the Lord of our hearts. That is necessary because we don*t start out with Him as Lord and because our flesh fights to remove Him as Lord even after we are saved. We sanctify Him in our hearts by surrendering to Him and His will. He sanctifies us and we are to sanctify Him. The Lord knew before He inspired the Bible that we would often fail to sanctify Him in our hearts and lives. We would sin. So it is wonderful that another purpose of the Bible is to restore us to sanctification, to what He wants us to be.

Psalms 19:7: The law of Jehovah is perfect, restoring the soul: The testimony of Jehovah is sure, making wise the simple.

The Bible will make us wise. Are we studying it and becoming wise? Are we what God wants us to be? If we give it a chance, the Bible will make us what He wants us to be.
